Bench signal testing & traps

Speedo dead — is it the speed sensor or the cluster? A bench test answers it

Before buying a cluster or a sensor, isolate the fault. Here's how a known-good test signal splits the problem in half.

A speedo needs a speed signal. Older cars may use a cable or a reed-switch sensor in the cluster; later ones use an electronic vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on the gearbox. Any break in that chain kills the needle.

The split test

On the bench we feed the cluster a clean, known frequency representing a road speed. If the needle tracks correctly, the cluster is healthy and the fault is on the car. If it doesn't, the fault is inside the cluster.

Car-side suspects

  • VSS itself, or its drive gear in the gearbox.
  • Broken or chafed wiring and connectors, especially after gearbox swaps.
  • Poor grounds affecting signal reference.
  • Speed signal routed through another module that has failed.
